The Technical Stuff
The snail collector consists of a
transparent bait holder with line and ball attached.
A slice of bait, cucumber, zucchini,
carrot ( about 1/8" or 3mm thick) or even the hard part at the
bottom of the stem of a lettuce leaf, which you purchase locally, is
attached to the collector.
The line and ball are attached to the
top of the collector to allow you to place it on the bottom of the
aquarium without getting your hands wet.
After baiting leave the collector in
the aquarium over night unless you have a heavy infestation in which
case inspect for snails after an hour or two.
Remove next morning and remove snails
and bait. Repeat as necessary.
Mark II
This new version of Snail Harbour
has now been introduced which is supplied with a suction pad to attach
it to the glass just below the water line in your aquarium, after much
sitting up at night watching snail movements it appears that a good
number in our aquariums prefer the top of the tank at night.
FAQ
Q1. How do I use
the suction pad?
A. Stick the suction pad onto the
glass so that a radiused corner of the collector touches the glass
thus producing another path on to the bait for the snails.
Q2. I looked in
the morning, no bait, no snails.
A. You have a lot of hungary snails!
Try baiting when you can go back to the Snailharbour after an hour or
two to check and remove snails and re bait as necessary. Over night
will work if you don't have an infestation.
Q3. Can
Snailharbour be used to transfer WANTED snails?
A .Yes its another use for
Snailharbour we hadn't thought of.
Q4. My fish try to
eat the bait.
A . Place rocks or plants to prevent
the fish from entering the collector, snails will find a way in.
Q5. I don't appear
to be able to catch any snails.
A . Assuming you have some, check to
see where they tend to live and place the Snailharbour in a more
suitable position.
Q6. I don't appear
to be able to catch any snails
A perhaps you are feeding your
aquarium to much, try reducing general feeding to ensure that the fish
don't leave un used food for the snails
Q7. I don't appear
to be able to catch any snails
A . If your air bubbles are too
strong it is possible that the scent of the bait becomes dispersed
through out the aquarium thus confusing the snails, try reducing the
air flow slightly or put the collector in a quiet spot
Q8. When I try to
collect snails during the day I don't seem to get many?
A. If the aquarium lamp is on or
there are bright lights in the room it may deter the snails from
feeding, try switching off or shading the tank.
Q9. What do I do
with the ball on the end of the line?
A. Either let it float on the surface
of the water or hang over the outside of the aquarium
Q10. And lastly we
were asked how you can tell when you have got all the snails out of
your aquarium?
A. Built into Snailharbour is an
invisible microchip that will program the last snail to put out the
cat, turn out lights and lock the door!
